Playing Surface
The Continuum has a specialized playing surface. We believe it is the most sensitive and responsive of all electronic music instruments, but it is not a straightforward XYZ pad nor a replacement for keyboards.
The Continuum surface detects movements with sub-millisecond timing, allowing the performer to react and intimately control the fine structure of the sound created by the EaganMatrix.
With the help of a skilled player carefully listening and rolling their fingers, the surface achieves incredible X (pitch) accuracy. The resulting positional accuracy is on the order of 15 microns - the same as it is for an acoustic violin player carefully listening to intervallic beats and micro-adjusting fingers.
A skilled player can get 14 bits of Z (pressure) accuracy with EaganMatrix presets and playing styles that allow human perception and control to such extreme precision. During onsets of notes sub-millisecond temporal precision is much more important, so the Continuum uses a quick series of 7-bit Z values to capture onset trajectory.
The Y (front-back) direction is monotonic to about 10 bits but has low absolute positional accuracy unless played with a special 2-finger technique. Still, with proper EaganMatrix sound design the Y direction is incredibly useful to a skilled performer.
Unisons and simultaneous notes a half-step apart are playable on the surface but require special playing techniques or special sound design.
