Introduction to the predesigned Internal Sounds

The Continuum Fingerboard contains an audio DSP that acts as a powerful internal sound engine delivering analog and digital audio outputs. The Internal Sounds are specially designed and are idiosyncratic to the Continuum Fingerboard, in the sense that they take full advantage of the Continuum's three dimensional polyphonic playing surface. The Internal Sounds are implemented using a variety of synthesis techniques including FM, physical modeling, timbre morphing, pitch shifting, additive synthesis, waveshaping, convolution, and classical synthesis. These same techniques are the basis for the user programmable EaganMatrix.

The specialized sound set for the Continuum Fingerboard were prototyped by Edmund Eagan in Kyma, Symbolic Sound's fantastic sound design, exploration, and performance environment. The prototypes were then hand coded by Lippold Haken for the Continuum Fingerboard's DSP.

Internal Sounds for Creative Musical Performance

Every Internal Sound in the Continuum Fingerboard uses multiple synthesis techniques. Each finger on the playing surface affects the synthesis parameters in a deep and sometimes complex way, delivering a human-machine performance experience that feels more acoustic than electronic.

Truly Impressive and Expressive

All of the sounds in the Continuum Fingerboard were specifically designed to take advantage of the rich performance capabilities of the Continuum Fingerboard surface. Immediate variances within a performer’s playing technique are translated into sonic expression, creating a human-instrument feedback loop that responds startlingly like an actual acoustic instrument. Every surface interaction, no matter how dramatic or subtle, is quickly transformed into musical expression. Delicate pitch inflections, wild timbral sweeps, pulsing amplitude shifts, and exotic tone clusters are just some of the possibilities.

Internal Sound selection is possible using the Continuum Fingerboard's Overlay Strip or through the Continuum Editor. Custom variations of each sound can be achieved by use of the Editor or through external Midi controller commands.

The Long Term Relationship

Like any fine acoustic instrument, playing the Continuum Fingerboard is challenging. Unlike most electronic instruments, the Continuum Fingerboard requires extensive practice to master. The Continuum Fingerboard's Internal Sounds are designed to satisfy and challenge the dedicated amateur as well as the Continuum Fingerboard virtuoso.
